Synthesis Outline

1. Introduction
   1. Introduce both sources and the authors/creators and a BRIEF summary of each
   2. Provide an overview of the issue or context for your focus
   3. Define terms if necessary—not “Merriam Dictionary defines…”
   4. Thesis which identifies the focus and rhetorical strategies you will synthesis for the sources
2. Synthesis: Rhetorical Strategy One
   1. Provide a topic sentence which clarifies the rhetorical focus of the section—focus on how you will blend your two sources.
   2. Frame your focus—guide your reader on how view the position the synthesis point
   3. Provide rhetorical evidence from Source #1
   4. Explore and explain the significance of the evidence and prepare the reader for more evidence from the next source. Find a way for Source #1 to speak with Source #2 on the rhetorical point.
   5. Provide rhetorical evidence from Source #2
   6. Explore and explain the significance of the evidence and prepare the reader for more rhetorical evidence from the next source. Explore the way Source #1 and Source #2 interact (compare or contrast) on the rhetorical point.
   7. Transition to the next section

   1. Reflect on the most important rhetorical points from your synthesis. Remind the reader of the most important evidence.
   2. Point in a direction based on the evidence. This should lead toward your rhetorical analysis.
   3. Close by reaffirming the synthesis idea as evidenced by the body of your paper and rhetorical evidence from the paper.
5. Works Cited (list your 2-3 sources in MLA format in alphabetical order). You should include the date of access for electronic sources, and sources should be in hanging indent format.

Reminders:

• Use third person
• Avoid using contractions
• Avoid using 1^st & 2^nd person
• Avoid asking questions in your paragraph
• Use a formal tone and style
• NO MORE THAN 20% of your paper should be source material
• You must include MLA in-text citations for all source material (Quoted or paraphrased)
• Your source material should be embedded in the paragraph. Avoid ending or beginning a paragraph with source material.
• A paragraph should have one main idea
• The thesis should identify the rhetorical strategies you will analyze
• You should not use more than three sources
