INSTRUCTIONS AND COMMENTS

English 1102 essays conform to MLA format rules.

The MLA Handbook (9^TH ed.) explains MLA format rules and conventions.

Follow in-class examples for correct MLA format.

Consult a tutor in the Writing Center for additional MLA help and examples.

The essay should be at least two full pages in length.

Spacing between lines and margins should conform to the Benchmark Essay sample page.

(Note:  In Microsoft Office, choose 1.5 spacing.)

The font for all out-of-class work is Times New Roman, 12 Point, Plain.

(Note:  Times New Roman 12 Point, Italic is used for specific titles in MLA format.)

The essay will have a separate Works Cited page.

Two print copies are required.

No double-sided copies will be accepted.

ALL essays will have a Works Cited page listing THE ASSIGNED PRIMARY SOURCE for a specific topic and the New York Times article.

Please note that a list containing ONE source would be a Work Cited page.

Please note that the word “page” is NOT included in the heading for a Works Cited or Work Cited page.

The essay will deal with a PRIMARY source and will QUOTE as evidence to back up the student’s thesis the PRIMARY SOURCE.

A primary source is NOT A WEB SOURCE CITED AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE FILM SELECTIONS or any other Instructor-provided source.

Everyone cites the same Instructor-provided source(s).

Specifically, the essay will include in-text citations whenever practical to back up the student’s argument.

An in-text citation to a primary or secondary source would frequently be a verbatim quotation of said source with a parenthetical in-text citation to follow.

IN MANY INSTANCES, MORE THAN ONE CITATION WOULD BE REQUIRED TO PRODUCE A GOOD ESSAY.

IN MANY INSTANCES, MORE THAN ONE CITATION TO A SECONDARY SOURCE WOULD BE REQUIRED TO PRODUCE A GOOD ESSAY.

THE SECONDARY SOURCE SHOULD NOT BE AN ON-LINE EQUIVALENT TO A PRINT SOURCE, ESPECIALLY ONE PROVIDED BY THE INSTRUCTOR.

CITE SECONDARY SOURCES AS A PRINT SOURCE, ESPECIALLY IN-TEXT, STABLE PAGINATION.

In other words, PRINT citations will be represented by word-for-word QUOTED MATERIAL followed by in-text, parenthetical citations including both the name of the source and the page number(s) of the specific citation from the source:  (Epstein A12).

THE TOPIC

The 2024 Presidential Election is over.

An article in The New York Times for 9 November 2024 listed several options/opportunities/offices for Vice-President Harris to pursue after her term of office as Vice-President ends in January.

This article is attached.

The original clipping would not scan legibly; consequently, we must use a FULL TEXT print-out from the database.

Unfortunately, this is MUCH longer than the real thing and not as quickly read and understood.

Consult a tutor for assistance if necessary.

After reading this article carefully, choose ONE (1) of the following characters and in a minimum two-page essay, choose THREE (3) of the pursuits listed in the article as suitable, recommended opportunities for the chosen character after the character’s SUDDEN LIFE CHANGE:  MOVING ON, MOVING OUT[2], ENDING A RELATIONSHIP, COLLAPSING FROM OVERWORK (YES, I’M LOOKING AT YOU FELLOW EDUCATORS.), etc.

For each recommended activity, explain why the activity is, given what we know about the character, appropriate/necessary/recommended.

Cite specific details from the television episode to back up your recommendations.

Cite outside sources when necessary.

A librarian will assist you.

For example, you may not know what a “think tank” does.

Modifications are acceptable.

For example, running for a higher office rather than a lower office could be an option.

Or, a character could choose to work for a non-profit instead of a think tank.

Imaginative reflections are encouraged, but they must be based on “facts” in the episode and reason/logic.

Introductory Paragraph[8]: (Yes, this means a paragraph.  Do NOT give me a single thesis statement in place of a developed paragraph.  Aim for THREE complete sentences BEFORE the thesis statement as the LAST SENTENCE of the first paragraph of the essay.  For example, one could begin with comments about the importance of participating in groups/communities/the political process, etc.

Thesis Statement:

Adjust your thesis statement as required given your choice of character/life options.  Always end on your strongest point—moving points in the article around if necessary.

THESIS:  After moving on/moving away/moving to/collapsing from stress, (Choose an appropriate word/phrase.  Here, this prepositional phrase is incomplete/unfinished.), FULL NAME OF CHARACTER[9] in (Insert the title of the work.) [by] (Insert the name of the author when there is an identified author.  Film/television selections are cited by title, so you do not have one specific author to cite.), should do three things ONE, TWO, and THREE.[10]

Body Paragraphs:

The body paragraphs would be in the order of points made in the thesis statement.  All body paragraphs will develop the points with reference to the episode including quotations if possible.  Other sources would be acceptable; however, any outside source should be fully documented by source name/page number in the essay and with a full citation on the Works Cited page.

Concluding Paragraph:

In this paragraph, remind the reader that leading others in a position of responsibility is a hard job, especially when elected to the position.  Then, transition to the need for adjustment afterwards and how the chosen fictional character would benefit from the three activities/jobs discussed in the essay.
