John Rocker

The interview with John Rocker by Sports, illustrated and published in December 1999, precipitated a lot of controversy because of the remarks made by Rocker. During the interview, Rocker used crude language to refer to New York City, immigrants, homosexuals, and other minorities, which immediately provoked public condemnation (Pearlman, 1999). Interviewing style also played its role; the journalist, Jeff Pearlman, did not intervene much and let Rocker say what he wanted to say, which helped to make the comments quite unadulterated. Rocker’s comments were far beyond any sports analysis and were considered as bigotry both by himself and on behalf of the entire MLB.

As a result, the MLB had to exercise disciplinary measures, including suspending Rocker for some part of the 2000 season. Apart from being fined, his utterances were deemed to breach the league’s code of conduct, as well as encourage discrimination. The MLB had to guard its image and avoid associating itself with such toxic discourse for the sport’s sake to shine and exemplify proper conduct. In this way, the MLB proved that it targets inclusivity and pursued a precedent that players are to be held liable for their actions both on and off the playing field (Walter et al., 2019).

However, ethical issues arise when it comes to the “off the record” comments that Sports Illustrated decided to publish. However, the difference between off the record and on the record is rather vague in most cases, and the magazine stated that Rocker’s comments were on the record. But considering the fact that Rocker was making statements that were of public concern, the move by the magazine to expose him fully is justifiable and in line with the responsibility the media has to the public. The responsibility that the magazine played in revealing Rocker’s behavior was essential in ensuring that he was brought to book.
