Harvard Referencing Style Guide

The Harvard Referencing Style Guide is a widely used referencing system in academic writing. It is named after Harvard University, which was one of the first institutions to adopt this style.

Basics of Harvard Referencing

In the Harvard style, sources are cited within the text, using (Author, Year) format within parentheses. A full reference list is included at the end of the document, providing detailed information about each source cited.

In-text Citations

When referencing within the text, the author’s last name and the year of publication are placed in parentheses. For example:

• One author: (Smith, 2021)
• Two authors: (Johnson & Clark, 2020)
• Multiple authors: (Anderson et al., 2019)

Reference List

The reference list is organized alphabetically by the author’s last name. The format for different source types is as follows:

• Books: Author(s) Last name, Initial(s). (Year). Title of Book. Place of publication: Publisher.
• Journal articles: Author(s) Last name, Initial(s). (Year). Title of article. Journal Name, Volume(Issue), Page range.
• Websites: Author(s) Last name, Initial(s) or Organization. (Year). Title of page or document. Available at: URL (Accessed: Date).
