The learning outcomes assessed in this coursework are:

  1. Discuss the principles underlying digital forensics practice and their importance.
  2. Describe the main stages and related steps of a digital forensic investigation.

Tasks to complete:

Use the provided template (on Blackboard) and forensic images (in the March2022CEM1 folder in the CSC common area – in the lab available only to CTI) to complete Phases 4-6 of the DFIR lifecycle (provided in the lesson week learning materials) I will work on it. and the following software (available only at CTI Institute):

FTK Suite (FTK Imager, Registry Viewer, FTK, PRTK). XAMN/Physical Analyzer. JTR and KaliLinux. Work independently and follow the principles and procedures covered during that week’s instructional period.

Stage 4 – Analyze the forensic images of the coursework provided in the relevant software mentioned above.

Stage 5 – Write a report (using a template) outlining the facts of the case (i.e. the results obtained from the forensic images, not an opinion on what the results mean). This section will be between 2,500 and 3,000 words. Otherwise, you won’t be able to explain everything correctly.

The report should detail the steps taken to obtain these facts. You must use a screenshot, but you must explain what the screenshot shows. You need to tell the reader what you see in the screenshot, and they don’t have to do anything.

It is helpful to create a timeline of the events surrounding the incident. You can use any program for this, but Padlet with its timeline format works great for this (see Blackboard for more information).
Level 6 – Reflects on the learning process throughout the module and this coursework and makes plans to improve his DFIR work in the future. This section should be between 750 and 1,000 words. If not, you have not answered the next question or provided enough details.

Critically evaluate the tools used (FTK Suite, XAMN, Physical Analyzer, Kali, JTR). How easy were they to use? How did they help you complete the task? How do you know the results are accurate? How do you know the tools are reliable? Can you understand it? Discuss the principles, practices, and DFIR phases covered during the week of instruction that you followed during the assignment. How did you ensure you adhered to these? Were some more difficult to understand than others?

Reflect on your learning journey: What went well? What didn’t? Which areas of digital forensics would be useful to tackle a similar module or real-world scenario next time? Think about time management – ​​did you complete your coursework within three months or did you leave everything until the last few weeks before the deadline? Remember, this may be your first time working with digital forensics. So you have learned a lot, but there is still much to learn. Before you move on to learning more advanced or additional tools, you should first become familiar with the basics. If you have performed DF before, you may be familiar with the tools and processes, but there are still areas that require further learning and development. Do not type your name (first name/last name/any other name) anywhere in the file or file name. Your work must be marked anonymous.
