Use of text and images to characterize Albertina Sisulu

The picture book Together We’re Strong (2014) by Liesl Jobson, Alice Toich, and Nazli Jacobs tells the story of Albertina Sisulu. Through an in-depth analysis of this picture book, she wrote at least her six-paragraph essay showing how the various pictures and written text used in the picture book contribute to the understanding of the protagonist of this picture book.

For example, an essay can focus on some of the following aspects of storyline, storybook setting, character behavior, dialogue, thoughts, and appearance. Note that you should not just specify examples in this book. We must be able to explain how these images and the specific language used contribute to the characterization. As part of the discussion, it is important to study the scholarly paper The Relationship Between Image and Text: An Investigation of Literary Elements in Picture Books (2012) by Miriam Martinez and Janice Harmon. The essay should include at least one restatement of part of the author’s argument and at least two quotes from the article (must be properly incorporated into the essay). The article or picture book should be referenced correctly, both as an in-text reference and as a bibliography.

Please note that you should only be able to identify and discuss aspects of the article that are relevant to the particular argument you wish to make in your essay. The given article can be used to introduce the essay and provide its context, or aspects of the given article can be used to support or deepen the analysis of the picture book itself.
The essay should include the following:
Introduction
Four paragraphs of essay body (each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the topic)
Conclusion
Reference list. Please note the following:
Picture books do not have page numbers. Please number each page. It’s okay if your page numbers are slightly different from other students’ page numbers. It is important to include page numbers in in-text citations that accompany citations from books. The APA Reference Guide is uploaded to Blackboard and displayed in the Module Info tab.

Assignments must be uploaded to Blackboard by March 20, 2020. Processing is by submission. Please note that copying by other students and/or reproduction of content from online or other sources (without proper attribution, reference or quotation marks) is strictly prohibited. A student who plagiarizes will get her 0% reward for the assignment and has very little chance of passing the module.

I also highly recommend making an appointment with her EPS10A2 module instructor or advisor designated at the UJ Writing Centre. A student who has consulted with a Writing Center tutor or advisor at least once will receive an additional 5% of her for the essay. Please note the following points. Tutor hours and writing center contact details can be found on Blackboard. If you find a specific tutor for the module, that tutor will record your consultation and ask you to put your name on the list next to it. If you choose to book an appointment with a counselor at Writing Her Center instead, you will receive a note from the counselor notifying you of your consultation. You must then give this slip of paper to one of her designated instructors. The instructor will list it and ask you to sign next to your name. It is your responsibility to ensure that your attendance has been recorded by one of your instructors by the deadline. You can ask for help in planning your essay, understanding questions, understanding prescribed articles, bibliographies, analyzing books, structuring paragraphs, or improving your use of language. But don’t wait until next week to schedule a tutor or counselor appointment.
