The prompts (questions) for this reflection paper are posted in this section under “Instructions for Dressmaker of Khair Khana assignment.” I have also included pictures of
Afghani women in the chadri as described in the book, as well as a couple of other pictures of what life was like for women in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.
Update:
This book was ordered for the class back in February, months before the withdrawal of US troops and retaking of Afghanistan by the Taliban. However, I wanted to give you a current update of the young woman featured in the book, Kamila Sidiqi. Shortly after this book was published, Kamila started working for the Afghan government (following the fall of the Taliban), primarily helping to sponsor smaller businesses in the country, especially with female ownership. A few years ago (I’m having trouble determining exactly when this happened), she and her husband and two children relocated to London. Recently her mother died and Kamila traveled alone to Afghanistan to attend her mother’s funeral and mourn with other family members. She was caught in Afghanistan when the Taliban began seizing power again. However, Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, the author of The Dressmaker of Khair Khana, worked to get Kamila on a plane before the Taliban could capture her. She flew to Switzerland and is making (or perhaps has already made) her way back to London and her family.
